If you can help us to establish SSA as a proper Non-Profit and obtain grants from the US or UK governments we would be very appreciative. We do not have the knowledge or experience to do this ourselves and require your assistance if ou can provide it. PeterUpdate. 4th March 2008

A great deal has happened in the last month since the launch of our campaign of the Silver Surfer Advocate project.

Michael and myself have distributed our leaflets to many outlets like libraries, doctor’s surgeries and day-centres for the elderly. Of course this form of publicity will only have a limited success but it is a start. It is pretty much guaranteed that we will be able to get an article published in the prestigious AARP magazine which of course will be seen by many thousands of members in the USA. I am making strenuous efforts to get publication in similar magazines in the UK. A magazine in my local area is publishing an article about me in their biannual magazine in April and there will be reference to Silver Surfer Advocates there. I am invited to go to the launch of a new website of Age Concern later this month. Although I don’t know if I will be required to speak there but if I am then certainly I will make sure that I make them aware of all that we are trying to do. I am also being visited and interviewed by a Berlin TV company in the springtime and will try to get some inclusion there if possible.

So it is a good start but of course this type of advertisement can only have limited success. It would be wonderful if we could get publicity from television and although I have tried various approaches it hasn’t so far resulted in any success. I have a platform within the Youtube website but only have a very small following there. However one of my latest videos on the subject was lucky enough to get featured and has received over 65,000 views. It is there that I think I can reach the people who I think can be of the greatest influence i.e. the young.

I am pleased to say that I have had a load of letters from those that either, confirm the benefits that they have observed from the older members of their families who use computers, or from those who have responded by saying that they intend to encourage those people to try. There have been many touching letters and one young man of 17 in the UK reports that the home where is grandmother lived until her recent death has over 200 flats and not one of those has a computer or access to one. He intends to donate a computer and set it up in the communal room. Another couple in America report that they are rebuilding computers, loading them with an operating system and some programs to give away free. There are many letters from those who already give classes to the elderly in Homes and Educational Institutions. This is all very encouraging and makes the project so worthwhile.

If you can help in any way we would of course be grateful.

Peter

There are now two new "domains" which you can use to access Silver Surfer Advocates. These are, for the moment, pointing to the pages here on askgeriatric.com but in time they will be moved to their own dedicated server which will give us more room to breath as this project grows. You can now access this site directly at one of these two URL's.

and

With time, if we grow towards it, we hope to have sites in other languages in other nations around the world that will serve the same purpose, to help elderly people learn about computers and technology, remove the fears and educate and inspire! Thank you for taking the time to visit and we hope to see you involved.

Introductions PDF Print E-mail

MichaelMichael's Introductory Message: Hello Guest, allow us to take a moment to introduce ourselves, my name is Michael and I handle the technical issues such as running the website and will be available to answer questions when they arise about issues of a technical nature. Peter and I came up with this idea through our discussions, which are frequent, about how we can reach out to seniors to try to help them in whatever ways we can. Peter has been doing a lot on his end with his many appearances in the media and his recordings and touring with The Zimmers Band while I've tried to do what I can behind the scenes. I've been running a website for Peter now for a little over a year and we've been good friends for at least that long. We both like the idea of bringing the generations together through technology and also of giving seniors new outlets and ways to feel connected so this project was born of those desires.

A bit about myself, I am 43 years old and live in Philadelphia, PA. in the United States, I have been working with computers for the better part of my life and have spent a lot of time helping others to understand them, including but not limited to members of my family, some seniors, some not. I do not believe in the adage that you can't teach an old dog new tricks, I believe that is a common misconception whose time has run out. I hope that this project will serve to make that saying go away once and for all, because I know it isn't true. It may be true however that you cannot teach a stubborn dog new tricks, but age has nothing to do with it and we will prove that to you here if you give us the chance.

In future articles and videos we will address many issues that concern the elderly about technology and do our best to both educate and put everyone's mind at ease about many of the commonly held beliefs about computers, such as that they are for kids, that they're too difficult to understand, that older people are too set in their ways, that you might break something or ruin something. We want people of any age to be able to experience the most out of life and like it or not, computers and the digital revolution are a very large part of life in the 21st Century. The days when you could simply ignore these things and live a full life without accepting them are gone and this scares many seniors. We want to help remove that fear and make the transition from the old world to the new digital world easier if we can.

PeterPeter's Introductory Message: I guess that you all know who I am so hopefully I need not introduce myself as a person. The videos on the side of this page will give you some insight for the reasons that Mike and myself have become involved with this project.

As an old person myself I can perhaps come to this from a different perspective than some others. I remember so clearly the difficulties that I had when I purchased my first computer. I really didn’t know what I needed one for and what the hell I was going to do with it. I knew that they would do writing stuff and thought that maybe that would be useful…..but I couldn’t type. All of the terminology of hardware, software peripherals etc was a foreign language and the man from the shop who came to fit it up for me might just have well be speaking in Japanese.

Left on my own I had to learn to use the damn thing….and I was so scared to get anywhere near it like it was a bomb that might blow up in my face. OK so that is a little dramatic I guess but it really was like that. So I do understand one of the many reasons that those elderly people would be feared to take the plunge. This is where I think that we can help.

I had no idea of the potentials of a computer and what was possible. I would think that if we could show the wonderful possibilities of the exciting things that one can do it might enable others to overcome the fears that I had.

Of course there is a multitude of reasons why even when given those explanations that many elderly people would still say “it’s not for me”. Money is a big problem, not only for the purchase but if the Internet is to be a tool then payments for connection and use become an issue. BUT I do believe there are many out there who have the desire and the means who need advice and help to get started.

Which of course what this project is all about…..to get the message out there of the joys of computing and pointing out all of the benefits. And lets not forget, apart from the pleasures, there are health benefits that accrue when the mind as well as the body is used and stretched.
